Built as a symbol of reconciliation after many years of hostility between Hutu and Tutsi, Monument de l'Unite serves as a site of great historical and architectural importance for Burundi nation. The monument's notable epitaph reads: "DUSENYERE KU MUGOZI UMWE" which means "We gather under one rope."
